Best Whole Grain Toddler Snack: Sprout Organic Wafflez
Among all the whole grain snacks we tested with actual toddlers, these waffles came out on top. Sprout touts these as a “reimagined Belgian snack.” Our testers though they tasted much like graham crackers.
You get five waffles in the box. They contain organic wheat flour, palm oil, cane sugar, blueberry puree, apple puree, whole eggs, chickpea flour, brown rice syrup, sea salt, sunflower lecithin, lemon oil, baking soda, 3 grams of added sugar (12% of RDA), and 45 mg. salt (3% RDA).
What We Liked
• Yummy!
• Organic and dairy-free.
• Individually wrapped. That makes them good for an on-the-go snack.
• No artificial flavors or dyes. No concentrates.
• Multiple flavors available. Our testers like the blueberry apple ones best.
What Needs Work
• Added sugar and salt.
• Too crumbly, said more than one of our testers. That means even though they are individually wrapped and good for travel, the crumbs might be frustrating for parents.
• Too bland, said a few of our testers. That wasn’t the majority opinion, but we see the point.
• Not for kids with wheat or egg allergies.
• Pricey.
Best Fruit Toddler Snack: Sprout Organic Crispy Chews
Anything that is fruity and chewy is a top favorite of most toddlers—but how do you find a fruit snack that isn’t loaded with extra sugar? Sprouts Organic Crispy Chews were the top choice among the healthier fruit snacks we tested. Basically, these taste like a fruit roll-up without all the junk.
These snacks are made from crispy whole grain rice mixed with dried fruits and veggies. They include organic apple puree concentrate, apple juice concentrate, raspberry puree, strawberry juice concentrate, red beet juice concentrate, organic crisped rice flour, cellulose powder and citrus pectin.
What We Liked
• Very tasty!
• Gluten free, dairy free, no eggs. These vegan snacks also have no added sugar or salt.
• Not sticky. Thanks to the cellulose powder that coats these snacks, they aren’t sticky. That was a flaw of many fruit snacks we tested.
• Single serve portions are individually packaged. Great for travel.
What Needs Work
• Pricey.
• Small serving size.
• Texture prompted some toddler dissent. While nearly all of our toddler testers like these fruity chews, a small minority objected to the crisp rice texture. Well, you can’t please everyone!
Best On-The-Go Toddler Snack: GoGo squeeZ Fruit on the Go
Snacks that are portable and NOT messy are the holy grail of toddler foods. In our search for the best on-the-go toddler snack, we pick GoGo pouches as the best bet. They were a hit with our testers.
These snacks come in variety of flavors that impressed our testers.
What We Liked
• Very yummy without being too sweet.
• 100% real fruit.
• Gluten free, nut free, dairy free, no high fructose corn syrup.
• Pouches are re-closable. The pouches are also easy to open.
• Variety pack of flavors.
What Needs Work
• 12 g of sugar per pouch.
• Check for expiration dates. Because these snacks do not contain preservatives, they only have so much shelf life.
• More expensive than regular applesauce and your own containers.
• Pouches are not recyclable.
• Don’t overdo it with pouches. For development reasons, toddlers must learn how to use utensils. Pouches are convenient, but should only be used in moderation!
