Best Budget-Friendly Candle Kit: Hearts & Crafts DIY Candle-Making Starter Kit

Most candle-making kits today include either beeswax or soy wax. As you might have guess, the latter are made from soybean oil.

Soy candles have a couple differences from those made from beeswax.

One thing we discovered as we tested these kits: soy wax has a lower melting point than non-soy wax candles—this means soy candles burn at lower temperatures . . . and last longer than regular candles.

Another consideration: soy candles have a scent that some folks find, well, unique. And the ability of soy candles to absorb/emit fragrance can vary (we’ll recommend a soy candle kit that has added fragrances later in this article).

If you are looking for a budget-friendly soy candle kit to try as a beginner, we like this one: Hearts & Crafts DIY Candle-Making Starter Kit.

Yes, this kit includes soy wax . . . and wicks specifically work better with soy wax. We liked the quality of this kit—note the wicks are pre-waxed, which provides for cleaner burning.

What We Liked

• Great for beginners.

• Includes two gold and teal candle tins—great for gifts.

• Includes one pound of soy wax flakes.

• Good overall quality.

• Affordable.

What Needs Work

• Not everyone is a fan of the wax scent.

• Only includes two candle tins—you may have to purchase more tins to make more candles.

• No dyes or scents. If you prefer a kit with colored dyes and/or scents, consider this next pick.

Best Soy Candle Kit For Beginners: Complete DIY Candle Making Kit Supplies

If you are looking for a rainy weekend craft project to do with the kids and you’ve never made candles before, this is a good place to start: Dilabee’s DIY candle making kit.

We liked this kit’s overall quality and complete set-up: basically, everything you’d need to make four scented/colored soy candles.

What We Liked

• Easy to follow directions.

• Great for beginners.

• Includes 4 fragrances including lavender, cinnamon vanilla, cotton candy and coconut lime).

• Also includes 4 dye colors.

• Great for making candles as a gifts.

What Needs Work

• Pricey.

The scents could be stronger. Some users report their “scented candles” didn’t have much of a scent when burning. Unfortunately, this can be true for many soy candles . . . soybean wax simply doesn’t throw off scent as efficiently as beeswax candles.

Best Kit For Larger Candles: DINGPAI Candle Making Kit Supplies

Soy candle making kits are great for beginners, but many have a common flaw: small melting pots. That means you have to scale down candle directions to the smaller size pot . . . and it’s hard to make any larger-size candles.

If you’d prefer a larger size melting pot, we’d recommend DINGPAI’s Candle Making Kit Supplies. Yes, this kit comes with a 900 ml melting pot—that’s much bigger than the 550 ml pots sold in other kits. Great for larger candles or the ability to make more candles at once (in case you are using this kit to make gifts).

This kit includes 12.4 ounces of soy wax, wicks, centering devices and a stainless steel spoon. Here’s more

What We Liked

• Great starter kit. We liked the included stainless steel melting pot, 100 wicks, candle wick center device and more.

• Easy to use.

• Affordable.

• Clear instructions.

• Works well with leftover candle ends (upcycling!).

What Needs Work

• Small amount of wax = can only make a couple of candles. This defeats the purpose of the larger melting pot, of course. However, you can always separately buy more wax . . . but we wish this kit had more.

Best Scented Soy Candle Making Kit: DIY Candle Making Kit Supplies Set

Soy candles are great for many reasons (they are longer-lasting since they burn at lower temperatures), but they do have one drawback: not everyone is a fan of the scent.

If you’d like to try a candle making kit for scented soy candles, we’d recommend Yming’s DIY Candle Making Kit. Yes, this includes six 7-ounce packs of soybean wax. But you also get six fragrance oils. Our favorites were vanilla and lavender, but there is also sandalwood, eucalyptus, lemon and peppermint.

Here’s more:
