Let’s talk the best organic olive oil!

Before we get to the winners of our blind taste tests, a few words of advice on selecting the best olive oil.

Yes, olive oil can be produced one of two ways: cold pressed or expeller. In our opinion, either is fine—but some olive oil enthusiasts have their preferred brew.

Basically, olive oil manufacturing starts with putting the olives in a cold water bath and then they are spun in a centrifuge to extract the oil.

Olive oil that is expeller pressed is literally physically pressed to extract the oil. While no heat is added to this process, an expeller naturally generates heat from the pressure—this can range from 140 to 200 degrees.  

The cold pressed olive oil method maintains a constant temperature below 120 degrees while separating the oil from the fruit in a giant centrifuge. Several olive oil experts we interviewed for this article believe the cold temperature helps maintain flavors.

Whichever olive oil you choose, remember to store it in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
