Best Organic: Natierra Nature’s Organic Freeze-Dried Strawberries
We love freeze-dried strawberries! They are a fantastic snack. And a great example of simple, clean food: just one ingredient!
We took a panel of mild-mannered folks and had them do a blind taste test of freeze dried strawberries. We asked which tasted the best. Since strawberries tend to range from tart to sweet, we tried to figure out which was best for different tastes.
For the best organic freeze dried strawberries, Natierra came out on top—great strawberry flavor. Here’s more:
What We Liked
• Strawberries had tart flavor notes—making them great when mixed with granola or trail mix.
• No added sugar. Yes, this bag has 28 grams of sugar—but that occurs naturally from the strawberries.
• USDA Organic.
• Vegan.
• Gluten free.
• No GMO’s.
• Fat free.
• Fair Trade.
What Needs Work
• Made in facility that handles milk, eggs, soy and wheat.
• Too sour for some folks.
• Crunch varied. The strawberries we tried out had a nice crunch, but we see reports from others that they were more chewy that crunchy.
Best Low Sugar: Mother Earth Products Freeze Dried Strawberries
Freeze dried strawberries are freeze-dried strawberries, right? Why would one brand have lower sugar than another?
Well, some freeze-dried strawberries have added sugar (that is, beyond what naturally occurs in strawberries).
And since strawberries can vary in sweetness (organic versus conventionally grown), some freeze-dried strawberry brands have lower sugar than others.
If you’d prefer a low-sugar option, we think these tasted the best: Mother Earth Product’s freeze dried strawberries. Here’s why:
What We Liked
• Not too tart, not too sweet. Very good flavor!
• Only 17 grams of sugar per ounce of strawberries.
• No added sugar or preservatives.
• Easier to store in pantry, thanks to plastic jar. Other freeze-dried strawberries come in pouches, which are easy to lose in a pantry!
What Needs Work
• Pricey.
• More chewy than crunchy.
Best Tasting: Trader Joe’s Dried Fruit Freeze Dried Strawberries
It’s hard to please strawberry enthusiasts. Some folks like them sweet. Others prefer tart.
When we did a blind taste test with several top brands of freeze dried strawberries, one topped the results for best taste: Trader Joe’s. These seemed to make everyone happy.
What We Liked
• Great for smoothies!
• No added sugar.
• Made in the USA.
• Good for on the go snack thanks to the small pouch size.
What Needs Work
• Pricey.
Best Budget-Friendly: So Natural Freeze Dried Strawberries
It’s hard not to love freeze-dried strawberries as a healthy, simple snack. But they do have one major drawback: freeze-dried strawberries are quite pricey!
Good news: one of the brands we tested not only tasted great, but also is much easier on the wallet: So Natural. Here’s more:
What We Liked
• More sweet than tart. Very good strawberry flavor. Not the best we sampled, but close!
• Whole strawberries instead of slices. We know some folks prefer that!
• Gluten free.
• No preservatives.
• Easy on the wallet.
What Needs Work
• Added sugar. This brand of freeze dried strawberries adds 4 grams of sugar per serving.
• Made in China. There’s nothing wrong with that, but we know some folks prefer freeze-dried strawberries made in the USA.
• Divided into small packs. Each pack just has .7 ounces of strawberries. On one hand, that makes them a great on-the-go snack. And yep, there is a lot of packaging!
