Buying An Acupressure Body Mat: Advice & Tips

Let’s talk acupressure mats! While they may look like medieval torture devices (bed of nails, anyone?), they are pretty easy for most people to get used to.

If you’re considering purchasing one of these mats, consider some of these tips.

  • The plastic pressure point buttons have sharp spikes! Yep, that’s the point (pun intended), but it will take some getting used to. Carefully lower yourself onto the mat and/or pillow and try to spread out your weight so it’s evenly distributed.
  • Try it with a t-shirt the first time, especially if your skin is sensitive. Once you’re used to it, you can try bare skin.
  • Your skin will look like tiny mice were walking across your back with golf cleats on. And your skin will also be red. That’s normal and will go away quickly.
  • Manufacturers recommend using these mats for from 10 to 40 minutes a day, twice a day.
  • You can use it on more than your back. For example, sit in a chair with the mat at your back and you’ll target your lower back and derriere. Or stand on it barefoot to stimulate your feet.
